A place to share the work. Then it becomes a place to share the process. Then the thoughts behind the process. Then the morning routine, the worldview, the personality, the entire self.

And somewhere along the way, the balance shifts.

The work stops being the thing.

The artist becomes the thing.

That’s the trade. The platform offers visibility, but in return it asks for proximity. More access. More frequency. More of you.

And if you’re not careful, you start making for the feed instead of making for the work.

That’s when the platform stops serving the artist and starts consuming them.

The mistake is thinking these platforms are stages.

They’re not stages. They’re billboards.

A stage is where the performance happens. A billboard just points.

It’s not meant to hold the whole experience. It’s meant to create enough tension, enough intrigue, enough interest that someone decides to go deeper.

That changes the question.

Not, how do I show up more?

But, where do I want people to go after they see me?

That’s a different posture entirely.

A lot of artists miss this because they run everything through the same identity. The art, the marketing, the updates, the distribution, the presence. All of it gets collapsed into one public self.

But separation creates leverage.

If the ads, campaigns, and promotional machinery run through a label, a project, or some other entity, then the artist gets to stay intact. More intentional. More curated. Less available.

That matters.

Because constant availability doesn’t make an artist feel important. Usually it does the opposite.

When someone can have endless access to you, they stop valuing the moment they actually encounter the work.

Predictability makes things easier to consume.

It rarely makes them more memorable.

And art doesn’t live on convenience. It lives on tension. Contrast. Timing. Surprise.

That’s why absence can be powerful.

Not disappearance for the sake of being difficult. Not artificial mystery. Just restraint.

When an artist isn’t constantly present, people notice. They ask where the work lives. They look a little harder. They lean in.

That small moment of friction is useful.

Because the moment someone has to seek you out, the relationship changes. You are no longer just another presence passing through the feed. You become someone worth finding.

And being sought out is more powerful than being constantly available.

There is, I think, one important exception.

YouTube.

Not as a social platform, but as a search engine for intent.

People go there looking for something. A song. A performance. A session. A moment that matters to them.

That’s different from platforms built around personality loops and endless interruption.

On YouTube, the work still has a chance to lead.

Not the breakfast. Not the opinions. Not the daily proof of existence.

The work.

Which suggests a different model.

Let paid media do the work of visibility.

Let discovery lead people to the art.

Let the art live somewhere that can hold it properly.

And let the artist remain a little out of reach.

Not invisible. Just not overexposed.

Because overexposure flattens meaning.

Imagine releasing something and letting the audience encounter only what matters. They hear about it. They see a signal. They search. What they find is not an endless trail of commentary and casual access. What they find is the work itself.

Cleanly. Directly. Without all the surrounding noise.

That feels different.

It feels like intention.

And intention changes perception.

This is really the whole thing.

Not a platform strategy. Not a content plan. An identity decision.

Are you trying to remain present in the feed?

Or are you building something people will want to discover?

Those are very different paths.

One says: here I am, keep noticing me.

The other says: the work is here when you’re ready.

Only one of those creates gravity.

So maybe the goal isn’t to post more. Maybe it isn’t to disappear either.

Maybe the goal is simply to choose where you exist, and to be disciplined about what belongs there.

Use the platform to point.

Use the work to hold attention.

Keep some part of yourself outside the machine.

Because the artist who controls their presence has a better chance of controlling their meaning.

And in the end, meaning is the part people remember.

Not the volume.

Not the frequency.

Just the signal.

Just the work.

Just enough mystery to make someone lean in.

I spent years at MTV Europe when a rotation slot could make an artist’s career across a dozen countries at once.

Back then, status was simple. Undeniable.

The gold record. The sold-out room. The headline slot. A spot on Braun’s European Top 20 chart. Ray Cokes or Pip Dann introducing your video.

You either had it or you didn’t. And when you had it, the whole continent knew.

Then the internet did its thing: it turned scarcity into abundance, and abundance into noise.

I watched it happen in real time. The mechanisms we used to gatekeep (video rotation, chart positions, premiere slots) became quaint. Then irrelevant. Now everyone’s dropping. Everyone’s charting. Everyone’s viral for 48 hours.

Success became so visible it became invisible - algorithmic wallpaper you scroll past without blinking.

Here’s what I learned watching generations of artists chase the same symbols across every territory: status dies the moment everyone can have it.

Status was never about the plaque or the number. It was about what couldn’t be faked. What couldn’t be bought. What couldn’t be gamed.

In music, that’s no longer visual. It’s behavioral.

The artists who mattered at MTV Europe weren’t always the biggest. They were the ones who made choices. Who said no. Who protected something we couldn’t see but could feel.

The new status symbols aren’t on walls. They’re in calendars and contracts and quiet rooms where the work happens.

Choosing not to chase. Choosing silence. Choosing ten people who care over ten thousand who don’t. Choosing to finish the work instead of feeding the feed.

Real status now? It’s having time. Creative control. An audience that leans in instead of scrolls by.

Anyone can upload. Few make people wait.

Anyone can buy attention. Few earn permission.

Anyone can look like they’ve made it. Few can step away from the machine and still be missed.

I’ve seen both eras. The before and the after.

After luxury comes discipline. After fame comes resonance. After being seen comes mattering.

That’s where status lives now.

Not in what everyone sees, but in what no one else can replicate.

Here’s the trap most musicians fall into:

They think consistency means boring. So they reinvent themselves every week. New look, new vibe, new everything. They’re chasing novelty like it’s oxygen.

Or they do the opposite. They post the exact same thing, in the exact same way, until even their mom stops watching.

Both fail for the same reason: they misunderstand what the algorithm actually rewards.

The paradox is simple

The algorithm craves novelty. It wants fresh, different, new. That’s how it keeps people scrolling.

But your audience? They crave familiarity. They want to know it’s you before they even see your name.

So you need both. At the same time.

Think about your favorite TV show. Every episode is different, but you’d recognize it in three seconds with the sound off. That’s not an accident. That’s architecture.

Your fans shouldn’t have to guess

When someone scrolls past your video, they should feel a spark of recognition before conscious thought kicks in. “Oh, that’s definitely them.”

Not because you’re doing the same thing. Because you’re doing your thing in a new way.

Maybe it’s the golden hour lighting you always use. Maybe it’s how you start every video mid-phrase, like they’re walking into a conversation. Maybe it’s that vintage microphone that’s always in frame, or the three-note riff that opens each track.

These aren’t gimmicks. They’re breadcrumbs. They’re the way home.

Repetition isn’t the enemy

We’ve been taught that repetition is lazy. That real artists constantly break new ground.

But here’s what actually happens: when you show up the same way, in the same place, with the same visual language, people relax. They lean in. They trust you enough to actually listen to what’s different this time.

Your weekly acoustic session from the same corner of your room? That’s not boring. That’s a ritual. People come back for rituals.

The way you always start with “Studio Sundays”? That’s not cheesy. That’s a signal. Signals create communities.

The first three seconds are everything

The scroll is merciless. You don’t get a buildup. You don’t get context. You get a split-second decision based on nothing but feeling.

So your distinctive elements can’t arrive fashionably late. They need to be in the first frame.

Your lighting. Your face. Your sound. Your vibe. Right there, immediately, no waiting.

If someone has to watch for five seconds to figure out who you are, you’ve already lost them.

Change one thing at a time

Eventually, you’ll evolve. You should. Growth that’s visible is growth that’s real.

But don’t burn down the whole house to redecorate.

Update your color palette, but keep your logo. Try a new format, but keep your opening line. Shift your sound, but maintain your visual language.

Your audience will follow you through change if you give them handrails. Take them away, and they’ll assume you’re someone else.

The real strategy

Consistency builds the brand. Novelty drives discovery.

You need a signature style that makes you instantly recognizable—and then you need to execute it freshly every single time.

It’s not about doing the same thing. It’s about being the same person while doing different things.

The algorithm will reward the novelty. Your audience will reward the familiarity.

And you? You’ll finally stop choosing between them.

The question isn’t whether people will remember you. The question is: what will they remember you by?

You don’t need to be everywhere. Being everywhere might be exactly what’s keeping you from mattering anywhere.

The data: 43% monthly burnout. 80% authenticity tax. 2% of listeners generating 18% of streams, buying most tickets. Two percent. While you craft thirty-second videos for three-second attention spans, those two percent wait for something worth their Tuesday night.

Phoebe Bridgers: indie venues before virality. JPEGMAFIA: direct releases to seekers. Soccer Mommy: local scenes, blog coverage. They understood: Real fans don’t need to be caught. They need to be served.

The Trade

Email lists become sold-out shows. Venue relationships outlast platform changes. One superfan outweighs fifty scrollers. Every algorithm chased is a relationship unchased. Every metric tracked is a conversation untracked.

The math: One dedicated fan equals fifty casual followers. One memorable show equals thousand forgotten posts. One direct sale equals hundred algorithmic maybes.

The Truth

Algorithms finding you? Beautiful. Bonus. Gift. But depending on algorithms to find you? That’s fear dressed as strategy.

The difference: Building something worth finding versus needing to be found to matter. Creating for the algorithm versus creating something algorithms eventually notice. Chasing viral versus being inevitable.

When Spotify’s algorithm discovers you because you’ve already built something real, that’s amplification. When you need Spotify’s algorithm to exist, that’s dependency.

The Choice

Replace Instagram time with venue relationships. TikTok creation with newsletter writing. Follower counting with fan conversations. Viral hoping with consistent showing up. Content calendars with concert calendars.

The permission structure: You can welcome algorithmic discovery while refusing algorithmic dependency. You can be findable without being desperate. You can let the internet amplify what already works instead of hoping it creates what doesn’t.

This isn’t easier. Easy was never the point.

The permission you’re seeking? You just gave it to yourself.

Now disappear from everywhere that doesn’t matter. Appear where you do. Let the algorithms catch up when they’re ready.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Songs everywhere. Reels on repeat. Playlists that never end. Algorithms that promise exposure to anyone willing to play the game.

Everyone is visible. Everyone is shouting. Everyone looks exactly the same.

The sun is so bright it blinds.

Standing out doesn’t mean being louder. It doesn’t mean more content, more posts, more of the same thing everyone else is doing but with better production value.

It means carrying something that makes no sense at first.

Your lantern is the thing that feels unnecessary. The release strategy that breaks the rules. The visual that doesn’t match. The story that makes people stop and tilt their heads.

At first, they’ll dismiss it. They’ll scroll. They’ll laugh, just like the crowd in the marketplace.

But then something happens.

They realize the lantern wasn’t meant to compete with the sun. It was meant to show them something the daylight couldn’t reveal. Something they didn’t know they were looking for.

The job isn’t to fit into the light everyone else is standing in.

The job is to bring light where it isn’t expected.

In a world where everyone is trying to be seen, the only way to be noticed is to do something that seems pointless.

Until it isn’t.

Carry your lantern
<div where Elena was, who then put it in her playlist that her running group shares every Monday.

The algorithm didn’t decide. The network did.

We like to believe that quality rises. That the best song wins. That if you just make it better, they’ll come. But music moves through people, not through merit. It travels along the invisible lines connecting friends to friends, tribes to tribes, people who already like the same things to other people who already like the same things.

This isn’t about going viral. Virality is an accident. This is about understanding that your audience isn’t a number - it’s a web.

When someone goes to your show, they don’t just leave with a memory. They leave with new listening behavior. They go home changed, and that change ripples. Their Spotify reflects it. Their friends notice. The contagion begins—not of illness, but of taste.

So here’s the uncomfortable question: Are you making music for isolated individuals, or are you making music that groups of friends can share? Are you playing shows that create moments worth spreading, or just playing shows?

The influencers matter, yes. But so does the structure-the shape of the network you’re building, node by node, introduction by introduction.

You can’t buy your way into a social circle. You can only earn your way in, one genuine connection at a time.

The shortcut isn’t better marketing. It’s understanding that your listeners aren’t really yours. They belong to each other. And if you’re lucky - if you’re generous, intentional, and patient - they’ll let your music be part of what connects them.

The question isn’t whether your music is good enough.

The question is: Who will care enough to tell their friends

Most musicians think they're selling songs.

But songs are everywhere. Infinite, free, disposable.

What's scarce is belief.

A statistic - "10,000 streams" - is nothing. A story - "this song helped a stranger walk through grief" - is everything.

That's what people remember. That's what spreads.

Hooks, not hype

Attention spans last seconds.

A fan scrolling past your video doesn't owe you a chorus. You need a hook: a laugh, a surprise, a line so sharp they can't look away.

The hook isn't the whole story. It's the invitation.

Conviction is contagious

We're drawn to belief. To someone who looks us in the eye and says: "This matters."

Your audience doesn't need a marketing team. They need you - with conviction, with vulnerability, with a promise to show up.

That promise, repeated, becomes trust.

Find your tribe

You don't need 8 billion listeners. You need the right 8,000.

Speak to the overlap between what you care about and what they already care about.

That overlap is where the movement begins.

Stories beat statistics

Fight story with story. Don't counter criticism with "but my numbers are growing."

Tell a better story: Why you made the song. Who it touched. How it almost didn't exist.

Stories stick. Stats slide off.

The artist as cult leader

Not in the sinister sense.

But in the sense that you're inviting people into a new world. A world where your songs aren't just background noise. A world where following you means being part of something bigger.

That's the leap from music to movement. From playlist filler to cult artist.

The takeaway

Don't just release tracks. Release belief.

Don't just post content. Tell stories.

Don't just market. Build a cult - a group of people who see the world differently because of your music.

That's how art spreads. Not through hype. But through conviction, story, and the courage to say:

"This is what I believe. Come with me.

Here's what they don't tell you about making it in music: You're not trying to fit into a category. You're trying to create one.

This is the discovery engine at work. And if you're a musician trying to "make it," you need to understand how it changes everything.

The Myth of Perfect Timing

We've been sold a lie about artistic success. That there's a formula. That you need to be the "right type" of artist for the "right platform" at the "right time."

This is industrial thinking applied to art. It's the same mindset that would have rejected Red Bull ("tastes disgusting"), dismissed the Beatles ("guitar bands are on their way out"), or passed on streaming services ("people will never give up owning their music").

The discovery engine doesn't care about your demographics. It doesn't care if you're 16 or 60, if you play acoustic folk or death metal, if you have a record deal or record in your bedroom. It cares about one thing: connection.

Multiplication, Not Prediction

The temptation is to find the one perfect song, the one perfect post, the one perfect moment that will change everything. This is prediction thinking, and it's killing your chances.

Discovery engines reward multiplication. More attempts, more angles, more moments for serendipity to strike. The person who kept clipping content didn't know which clip would work. They just kept clipping.

Your breakthrough won't come from the song you spent two years perfecting. It'll come from the 30-second voice memo you recorded on your phone, or the mistake you made during a live stream, or the cover you did in your bedroom at 2 AM.

The Constraint That Sets You Free

Here's the paradox: The constraint isn't the enemy of creativity. It's the enabler.

Profit, followers, streams - these aren't your purpose. They're the constraints that allow you to keep playing the game. The real game is discovery. Discovery of what connects. Discovery of what moves people. Discovery of what makes them feel less alone.

When you chase the metrics, you're optimizing for the wrong thing. When you chase discovery, the metrics follow.

The Triangle That Matters

You're not just serving the algorithm. You're serving three masters:

Your fans (who want authentic connection)

Yourself (who needs creative fulfillment)

The platform (which needs engaging content)

The magic happens when these three align. When your authentic creative expression creates content that platforms want to distribute to audiences hungry for exactly what you're offering.

Most artists optimize for one at the expense of the others. They chase the algorithm and lose their soul. Or they create only for themselves and wonder why nobody cares. Or they pander to fans and stop growing.

The artists who break through serve all three simultaneously.

What Do You Do Next

Stop asking "Will this work?" Start asking "What might this teach me?"

Stop waiting for permission from gatekeepers who don't exist anymore.

Stop self-selecting out of platforms because you don't think you "fit."

The discovery engine is running 24/7. It's surfacing music nobody predicted would work, by artists nobody saw coming, for audiences nobody understood.

Your job isn't to predict what will happen. Your job is to show up consistently, authentically, and let the engine do what it does best: discover.

The question isn't whether you're the right type of artist for this moment.

The question is: Are you ready for this moment to discover you

We live in the zero-click economy.

People don't click anymore. They scroll, they swipe, they glance. Their attention moves like water finding the path of least resistance.

And here's the trap most artists fall into: they still think like it's 2012. They pour everything into one "official" account, betting that one profile could somehow stand against the tidal wave of content washing over us every second.

It doesn't work that way. Not anymore.

The Discovery Algorithm Doesn't Care About Your Feelings

If you want reach, you need surface area. More accounts. More clips. More chances to collide with the algorithm at just the right moment when someone is ready to discover you.

This is why major artists hire clipping agencies. Their job isn't to create brilliance (that's already been done). Their job is to flood the zone. The result? Sometimes the artist's own channel becomes a ghost town, alive only for the occasional announcement. But the internet remains full of them.

The math is simple: more entry points equals more opportunities for serendipity.

The Content Reality Check

More accounts means more content. But this isn't the impossible mountain it appears to be.

A single live session can yield dozens of micro-moments. One shoot day can power weeks of clips across platforms. The constraint isn't production capacity. It's imagination.

Consider 2Hollis. One lonely post sits on his official profile. But search TikTok's #2hollis tag and you'll discover 116,000+ posts. One seed, multiplied a hundred thousand times by people who found something worth sharing.

That's not luck. That's infrastructure.

The New Paradigm

Here's the shift that changes everything: think of each platform like a room in your house.

Your website has pages for merch, tour dates, history, daily updates. Each serves a purpose. So why cram everything into one social media account?

One account for behind-the-scenes moments. Another for live clips. A third for history and origin stories. A fourth for fan-generated reactions and covers.

Not one artist channel trying to be everything to everyone. Multiple doors into the same house, each inviting different kinds of visitors.

What Actually Spreads

It's never the "perfect" post that spreads. Perfect is predictable, and predictable is invisible.

What spreads is the thing that hooks curiosity. A lyric that hits differently. A strange arrangement that makes you stop scrolling. News of a $5M record deal. Or, as in Spike Lee's new film, the kidnapping of a record label president's son.

The spark can be anything. What matters is whether you've built the bonfire ready to catch it when lightning strikes.

Multiplication Beats Perfection

The old way was about polish: perfect the one post, optimize the one account, build the one funnel.

The new way is about proliferation: multiply, fragment, be everywhere at once.

Because in a zero-click economy, reach doesn't come from one account shouting louder into the void. It comes from creating so many entry points, so many moments of discovery, that your audience finds you no matter which corner of the internet they're exploring.

It comes from a thousand voices, all saying your name.

The algorithm wants you to make a 15-second hook.

The playlist curator wants you to sound like last month's breakout artist.

The marketing team wants you to chase whatever's trending on TikTok.

But here's what they don't tell you: the shortest path to nowhere is still nowhere.

The Adventure of Agency

When you choose the longer path, when you book that tour of coffee shops instead of waiting for the Spotify playlist placement, when you write that 8-minute instrumental piece instead of another verse-chorus-verse- something remarkable happens.

You become the author of your own story.

Not the algorithm. Not the tastemaker. Not the trend. You.

This is what agency looks like in music: the conscious decision to build something that matters to you, even when (especially when) it's harder than following the prescribed formula.

The Magnetism of the Authentic

Consider the artists who've lasted. The ones whose work you return to years later, decades later. Did they become indispensable by following the rules, or by making their own?

Johnny Cash recording "Hurt" in his seventies. Radiohead releasing "Kid A" when everyone expected "OK Computer Part II." RAYE securing her first UK number one after a very public break with her label.

Each chose adventure over algorithm. Each chose the longer path.

And each built something irreplaceable.

Your Small Venue Philosophy

That dingy club with the broken PA system? It's not a stepping stone to something better. It's your laboratory. Your chance to connect with 30 people who chose to spend their Tuesday night with you instead of Netflix.

Those 30 people matter more than 30,000 passive streams from people who can't remember your name.

Because connection scales. Authenticity compounds. But only if you're willing to show up, night after night, venue after venue, building your craft one conversation at a time.

The Concept Album in a Singles World

Everyone's making singles for the algorithm. So make an album that tells a story.

Everyone's chasing the 2.5-minute pop formula. So write the song that needs to be 7 minutes long.

Everyone's making music for the masses. So make music for the people who get it.

This isn't contrarian for the sake of being different. This is strategic differentiation. When everyone else is building the same thing, the different thing becomes the remarkable thing.

Your Terms, Your Timeline

The industry will pressure you to move fast, to compromise, to give them what worked last quarter.

But sustainable careers aren't built on other people's timelines. They're built on your vision, your values, your willingness to take the long view when everyone else is optimizing for the short term.

The adventure, the real adventure, isn't getting famous quickly. It's building something that lasts. Something that matters. Something that's unmistakably yours.

The Choice Is Always Yours

Every day, you get to choose:

Follow the formula or find your voice. Chase trends or create them. Build for the algorithm or build for eternity.

The longer path isn't longer because it's inefficient. It's longer because it goes somewhere worth going.

Your music deserves that journey. And so do you.

Music used to be scarce.

You had to seek it out. Drive to the record store. Save up for the album. Listen to the whole thing because you owned it.

Now? It's everywhere. Every song, every time, every place.

This is extraordinary. A teenager in rural Montana can discover an underground jazz quartet from Tokyo. An artist can release a song at midnight and have it heard by someone in Brazil by breakfast. The barriers to both creation and discovery have never been lower.

The question isn't whether this abundance is good or bad.

The question is what we do with it.

Because the same platforms that democratized distribution also created new pressures. The algorithm watches. It learns. When we skip, it notices. When we stay, it remembers.

This creates a gravity well. Music that doesn't get skipped rises. Music that gets skipped sinks.

So what survives?

Often, it's the safe music. The predictable music. Music that sounds like other music we already liked.

But the same tools that create this pressure also create opportunity.

The artist who understands the game can use it. Not by playing it safe, but by being strategically bold.

The distribution is free. The audience is global. The only question is whether you'll use these tools to chase the algorithm or to find your people.

Kate Bush wrote Wuthering Heights. Odd. Shrill. Literary. No label wanted it. It hit number one and made her a household name.

Prince dropped Purple Rain. Nine minutes long. Guitar solos that screamed. It became an anthem.

Björk never asked if her songs fit playlists. She built a global career being unmistakably herself.

The platform gave them global reach. But they didn't let the platform change their voice.

None of them played it safe. None of them made background music.

Here's what the algorithm gets wrong: It optimizes for not being skipped instead of optimizing for being remembered.

But memorable is what matters.

Memorable is what builds careers. What creates fans instead of casual listeners. What turns a song into a cultural moment.

The choice is simple. Blend in or stand out. Make playlist wallpaper or make something unforgettable.

Lean into the long intro. Embrace the jagged edges. Let your voice crack.

Because in a world drowning in content, the scarcest thing isn't another song.

It's a song that could only come from you.
<div More posts, more updates, more presence. We measured our worth in metrics that changed by the hour and chased validation from strangers who were chasing their own.

But here's what we forgot: Attention isn't the same as impact.

The best ideas don't scream. They whisper - and people lean in to listen.

When you stop performing for the algorithm and start creating for the human being who needs your work, something shifts. Your voice changes. Your work deepens. And paradoxically, the right people find you faster than they ever did when you were shouting from every digital rooftop.

This isn't about disappearing. It's about appearing where it matters.

The podcast conversation that changes how someone thinks about their work. The small venue where your music moves people to tears. The story shared between friends because it had to be shared.

These moments don't generate likes. They generate change.

Quality doesn't need a megaphone. It needs intention, patience, and the courage to trust that good work finds good people - not through algorithms, but through the oldest technology we have: one human telling another human about something that mattered.

The revolution isn't happening in the feeds.

It's happening in the quiet spaces where real work gets done. Where trust is built one genuine interaction at a time. Where creativity serves the work, not the platform.

Are you ready to lower your voice and raise your standards?

The world is listening. It always has been.

You just have to give it something worth hearing

Radio stations think in demographics. "18-34 males." "Female millennials." It's how they sell ads.

But you're an artist, not a radio station.

You make the art you make. You follow your instincts, your vision, your voice. That's what you do best.

But sometimes it helps to put on a marketing hat and ask: Who is this actually for?

The Real Question

In today's chaotic landscape - 100,000 songs uploaded daily - someone has to choose your music. Who is that someone? And why?

Dua Lipa makes her music, but it resonates with people who see themselves as globally aware and unapologetically confident.

Tyler, The Creator follows his creative vision, and it speaks to misfits who refuse to be categorized.

Taylor Swift writes her truth, and it connects with people who process life through storytelling.

They're not chasing demographics. They understand who their art serves.

Your Exercise

You don't need to change your music. But it's worth understanding who it's for.

Write one page about the person who truly gets your art:

What do they believe that others don't?

How do they see the world?

What are they trying to become?

Why does your music matter to their story?

The Point

This isn't about changing what you create. It's about understanding who you're creating it for.

When you know that, everything else - how you share it, where you play it, how you talk about it - becomes clearer.

You're still making your art. You're just being smarter about who needs to hear it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Seventy songs that artists thought were ready for the world.

Most were good. Technically proficient. Well-produced. Perfectly average.

Only a handful made it to rotation. Not because the others were bad-because they were forgettable.

Today, Spotify processes 100,000 submissions per day. The math is even more brutal now, but the principle remains the same: good songs disappear into the noise. Memorable songs cut through it.

The difference isn't talent. It's intention. Are you creating something worth talking about, or something that sounds like everything else?

Your fans need ammunition. Give them a lyric that sparks debate. A visual that demands screenshots. A performance that becomes a story they tell.

Find your signature—that thing people use to describe you in one sentence. "She's the artist who..." Then repeat it until it becomes synonymous with your name.

Culture right now is chaos. One moment you're scrolling past Jeff Bezos's $50 million Venice wedding, the next a newsfeed shows you human suffering–no preamble, no context. We scroll, and meaning fractures. No sense sticks.

Everything moves too fast for coherence.

Musicians, your opportunity lies not in mimicking chaos–but countering it.

Not ironic. Not opportunistic. Just intentional.

Post a polished visual–sure. Jump on every trend–don't bother. Instead, align every message, every lyric, every visual, with your authentic voice. That consistency builds trust. And trust becomes attention in a culture where attention isn't given–it's earned.

The elevator drop losing you in seconds? Not helpful. But a mini-story can ground someone.

"This song came from three nights of midnight journaling..."

"This verse is my late-night pep talk..."

The details matter. They offer context, emotional anchoring. In a world where everything blends into sameness, context isn't optional–it's your superpower.

The art we make often becomes the habitat we inhabit. So invite your fans into your habitat. Host live chats that aren't just about promo–but thoughtful conversation. Remind them they matter. They're not just streaming stats–they're people.

We're not all Superman. But we can be the gentle hero. The one who lifts a sadness with a melody, who says: "Here is a space where kindness, or even silence, still matters."

Release a snippet with a bullet-point list: "Why this lyric matters to me." Share the imperfect demo–raw and unfiltered. Craft a playlist of songs that inspired this EP, with short captions to each.

Small actions. Big ripples.

Everything around us is screaming. Your choice isn't to scream louder–it's to whisper with purpose. To offer coherence when everything else fragments. To build community when everything else atomizes.

That's not weakness. That's leadership.

Your fans aren't metrics. They're humans looking for something that makes sense.

And you, artist, can give it to them.

There was a time when DJs could make hits.

In the early 90s, my job title at MTV was Head of Music Information. That title alone tells you everything about how the industry worked then.

Every week, playlists flooded in from radio stations, club charts, tastemaker DJs around the world. Who played what. What broke big in Berlin. What was climbing in Manchester. What bubbled up from pirate stations in East London.

Everyone was watching everyone else. We studied the plays. We tested the tracks. We tracked the movement. Slowly, track by track, station by station, a song could snowball into a hit.

It was messy. Organic. Human.

You didn't buy attention. You earned it through circulation. People fell in love with music through discovery, not delivery.

Today, the DJ has been replaced by a machine.

Spotify's Discover Weekly. TikTok's For You Page. YouTube's autoplay. These platforms don't listen to your song. They watch how people react to it.

They don't reward depth or risk. They reward behavioral outcomes. Engagement, skips, watch time, saves, shares.

Success isn't about quality anymore. It's about compatibility with an algorithm that doesn't care what your music means.

But what if that's not a problem?

What if, instead of resisting the platform, you used it like a lab?

Here's the shift: Don't act like one account trying to do everything. Act like a network of creative surfaces, all working together.

Be the scene, not just the artist.

Your core artist account is for real fans. Full songs. Honest posts. Thoughtful rollouts.

Your TikTok side account is for experiments. Teasers, beat flips, early verses, duets.

Your visual Instagram feeds your aesthetic. Polaroids, behind-the-scenes, artwork.

A theme or meme page in your genre draws top-of-funnel discovery from people who don't know you yet.

A fan-run account (with your support) becomes a thriving community hub.

This isn't fragmentation. It's strategy.

Every surface has a different job. Some catch attention. Some build connection. Some deepen loyalty. Together, they form an ecosystem, not just an artist page.

In the 90s, we studied DJs and charts. Now you study data trails.

If something flops, learn. If something takes off, guide people deeper.

The outer orbit feeds the inner sanctum. Experiment outside. Build inside.

Don't confuse this with selling out. You're not making content. You're building pathways to your art.

The algorithm doesn't care what your music means. But your fans do.

So meet them where they are. Let the machine spread the seed. Let your real work grow the roots.

The DJ may be gone. But the booth? You can still build it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Minneapolis connection. When he recommended something, it was because he thought I'd actually like it.

The algorithm knows your clicks.

It doesn't care if you love the song. It cares if you keep listening. It knows that the longer you use the service, the less likely you are to cancel your subscription. It doesn't care if the music moves you to tears or makes you dance. It cares if you scroll to the next track or close the app.

We traded human curation for artificial optimization.

The old gatekeepers had skin in the game. The DJ at the college radio station played music because she believed in it. The music journalist wrote about bands because they mattered. The guy at the indie record shop staked his reputation on every recommendation.

The new gatekeepers have engagement in the game.

They've turned taste into data points. Passion into metrics. Discovery into retention algorithms.

Here's what we lost: the person who said, "I know this sounds weird, but trust me." The friend who made you a mixtape. The stranger at the coffee shop whose playlist made you ask, "What is this?"

We lost the uncomfortable moment when someone plays you something that doesn't fit. The song that takes three listens to click. The album that changes how you think about music entirely.

The algorithm doesn't take risks. It doesn't have intuition. It doesn't love anything.

It just optimizes for more of the same.

Musicians now write for the machine. Hooks in the first seven seconds. Familiar chord progressions. Predictable drops. Because the algorithm rewards familiarity disguised as novelty.

But here's the thing about human taste: it's gloriously inefficient. It's wonderfully unpredictable. It's beautifully subjective.

The algorithm will never love something so much it stays up all night pressing it on friends. It will never stake its reputation on a weird B-side. It will never say, "This might be terrible, but you have to hear it."

That's still our job.

Here's what the music industry figured out in the 90s that most marketers still miss:

People don't buy products. They buy uniforms.

Not the kind with badges and epaulettes. The kind that signal to everyone else exactly who you've chosen to be.

When Kurt Cobain threw on that thrift store cardigan, he wasn't making a fashion statement. He was creating a uniform. One that said, "I reject your polished, mainstream world." And suddenly, millions of teenagers had a way to wear their rebellion.

Same with the Spice Girls. They didn't just make pop music - they created five distinct uniforms of identity. Pick your persona. Wear it proudly. Show the world.

The Britpop bands? They handed working-class kids a uniform that said, "I'm proud of where I come from." The parka wasn't just a jacket. It was a flag.

Here's the thing about uniforms: they only work when everyone else can see them.

I learned this firsthand working in Music Programming at MTV. We weren't just playing videos - we were broadcasting uniforms. Every rotation of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," every Spice Girls premiere, every Oasis clip was showing millions of kids exactly what they could wear to signal who they were.

The uniform had to be visible, recognizable, and shareable. Otherwise, what's the point?

Most musicians today are still trying to sell feelings. "My music will make you feel something!" But feelings are private. They're internal. They don't do the work.

Identity is public. It's external. It broadcasts.

The question isn't whether your fans love your music. The question is whether they're willing to be seen loving your music.

Because if they're not willing to wear the uniform - literally or figuratively - then you're not creating identity. You're just making songs.

And songs are forgettable.

Uniforms? Uniforms change the world

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It was filling the playlist with songs that were merely tolerated.

We tested everything. Loved, hated, or accepted - every song got a score. And here's what we discovered: the songs people loved were often the same ones others despised. But those polarizing tracks? They sparked something. They mattered. They could pull new listeners from other stations.

The merely tolerated songs were different. Safe. Bland. Background noise that nobody complained about because nobody cared enough to complain.

Fill your airwaves with too much tolerance, and people tune out. Not dramatically. Quietly. A slow drift into nothingness.

Now imagine that same problem, but supercharged by machines.

That's what I call the tyranny of the skip.

The algorithm doesn't care about superfans.

It cares about skips. Every 30-second abandonment is a failure. Every pause is suspicious. Every replay is celebrated, but only if it leads to non-skipping behavior downstream.

So music adapts. Hooks move to the front. Intros disappear. Songs shrink to bite-sized portions optimized for the machine's attention span, not yours.

The result? A streaming catalog filled with the digital equivalent of elevator music. Songs engineered to avoid the skip, not to create a moment.

Here's what we've traded away:

The weird intro that takes 45 seconds to reveal itself. The bridge that makes no sense until the third listen. The song that sounds wrong until suddenly it sounds perfect. The risk of confusion in exchange for the possibility of transcendence.

We've optimized for the least common denominator of human attention. And we're surprised when nothing feels urgent anymore.

The path forward isn't nostalgia.

It's courage.

Courage to sit with a song past the algorithm's judgment window. Courage to create music that doesn't apologize for taking time to develop. Courage to program experiences that value depth over metrics.

The skip button isn't the enemy. Our willingness to let it make all our creative decisions is.

What if, instead of avoiding skips, we earned the replays

<a class="image-link honestly, messily.

But something’s shifting.

Today, for a growing generation, art is less about confrontation and more about comfort. Less about being moved and more about being surrounded. Wrapped in soft tones, pretty lights, curated calm. Atmosphere has replaced intention.

It’s not that people don’t want art.
They just want it on their own terms:

Quick.

Easy.

Aesthetic.

Shareable.

And that’s where new artists get confused.

They believe they’re in the business of truth. Of crafting something timeless, raw, and resonant.
But they’re entering a market obsessed with vibes. With emotional feng shui. With ambient identity design.

This is the generational shift no one warns you about.

From Sacred to Service Provider

Art once lived in temples, galleries, and record stores.
Now it lives in playlists, TikToks, and branded pop-ups.

Where we used to seek meaning, we now seek mood.
Where we used to value perspective, we now curate aesthetic.

For the artist, this is dangerous territory.
Because if you’re not careful, you’ll confuse applause with alignment.
You’ll chase reach instead of resonance.
You’ll serve the algorithm instead of the soul.

So what’s an artist to do?

Know the system, but don’t be of it.
Learn how emotional branding works. Understand why certain visuals spread. But don’t let that become your compass.

Refuse to be background noise.
Atmosphere is easy to manufacture. Meaning isn’t. Say something. Risk being unfollowed. Be a signal, not wallpaper.

Invite participation, not sedation.
Don’t just “soothe” your audience. Challenge them. Ask for their story, not just their scroll.

Build mythology, not just content.
Atmosphere fades. But myth, story, symbolism - those carve into culture. Those build tribes, not trends.

The artist of the future won’t just make “nice things.”

They’ll build portals in a world full of fog machines.
They’ll carry torches, not fairy lights.
They’ll remind us that it’s okay to feel, to break, to rebuild.
